On November 19, the UIS Art Student League set up a table at the Student Union showcasing art works created by its members that were for sale to the public. The setup was filled with various materials from cups and kitchen items to knitted caps to art all at affordable pricing for students.
Honoka Adachi, a student leader at the Art Student League, notes that this event is a fundraiser for the club and the student artists. She stated that this event was held “for art students to self-promote, make connections and develop social skills.”
Adachi explained that 70% of the proceeds from this the fundraiser went to the artists themselves, while 30% were donated to the Art Student League.
John Toelle, a former president of the Art Student League, provided context about the event’s history. He shared that similar art sales were held every semester before COVID-19 but have been irregular since due to pandemic-related restrictions. The organization now hopes to restore the sales to their regular schedule.
Toelle also highlighted other activities the Art Student League has organized in the past, such as pumpkin carving, apple picking, and a trip to the Saint Louis Zoo—hinting that students can anticipate more engaging events next semester.
With last week’s successful sale, the Art Students League has reignited a cherished campus tradition, one that empowers artists, enriches the college experience, and promises even more creative gatherings in the semesters to come.
