The Black Student Union (BSU) at the University of Illinois Springfield hosted an evening of music, culture, and community on Thursday, November 6, through its event titled “RnBSU.” The name blends RnB music with the initials of the organization, reflecting the night’s theme of celebrating the power and influence of Black musical traditions.
The event offered students a chance to enjoy snacks, socialize, and engage with Black culture in a welcoming, creative environment.
“We are here to teach you about Black people’s music and the culture behind it,” said BSU member Alicia Williams, who helped lead the night’s activities.
Another organizer, Mia Vicker, noted that the goal was connection as much as education. “Today we are hosting the BSU event where you can come learn about RnB and music,” she said.
To bring that experience to life, the organizers incorporated interactive games featuring classic and contemporary RnB and pop artists.
The first game, “Guess the Lyrics,” challenged participants to identify what came next in songs by artists including Ne-Yo, Michael Jackson, and Rae Sremmurd. Shawn Meyer won the round.
Next came “Freeze Dance,” where students had to stop dancing the moment the music paused. The winner, O Odelle, received a self-care prize package that included bath salts and lotion.
The final activity reimagined a familiar favorite: Musical Chairs, but without the chairs. Instead, participants circled up and raced to grab a marker when the music stopped. Baraka Culpepper claimed the final prize bundle.
Through games, music, and an inviting atmosphere, RnBSU brought students together to celebrate the impact and legacy of Black music while strengthening cultural awareness across campus.
