The University of Illinois Springfield community gathered Friday, Nov. 14, 2025, to celebrate the annual lighting of the Colonnade, a campus tradition marking the unofficial start of the winter season. Hosted by the UIS Student Government Association (SGA), the event featured festive lights, hot chocolate, cookies, and a chance for students to come together on a brisk November evening.
SGA President Jazel Ware-Grant said the event plays an important role in fostering community as the semester winds down.
“This is an important event for our college because it helps get students out to start the holiday season off and to bring a sense of community to campus so that we can all be more connected and together,” Ware-Grant said.
Students in attendance echoed that sense of unity. Junior Joey Karlesky said the event was a welcome break from coursework and a chance to enjoy campus landmarks in a new way.
“It’s cool getting everyone together, having some hot chocolate, and watching the coolest part of our campus light up for the winter,” he said.
Sophomore Josslyn Gaona said the lighting captured the spirit of the season. “I like it because it’s nice to have community on campus. I really like wintertime and winter lights, and it’s nice to have part of our campus that does that,” she said.
Graduate student Kaleigh Inniss agreed that the event offered a much-needed moment of connection. “It’s nice to have a sense of community and do something chill with everybody,” she said.
Family members and friends joined students at the event, and Chancellor Janet L. Gooch greeted attendees as the Colonnade illuminated against the night sky. The annual tradition takes place each year before Thanksgiving break, bringing students together before final exams and the holiday season.
Those who missed this year’s lighting will have another chance to celebrate the campus landmark when the Colonnade lights up again next fall.
