Damsel:

A Movie Review

Millie Bobby Brown is starring in a new film out now on Netflix. Damsel follows Elodie, played by Brown, in medieval times. What starts as a seemingly typical movie featuring a princess marrying to save her kingdom and the stepmom who is distant from the girls. It quickly begins to take a turn when eerie details keep appearing. Once Elodie’s family leaves and she has been married to the prince, she is met with a horrible fate. She has been sacrificed to a dragon that lives in the mountains of the kingdom. Her battle is to outsmart this dragon and be the first one to survive in what seems to be so long. This is where the concept of the title is brought into the film.

Elodie steers far from the typical damsel in distress and is instead the one fighting for survival. This brings in some interesting action scenes where Elodie has to use what is around her, considering the dragon she is up against well, is a dragon. While she is in the caves, she of course is met with many difficult tasks but proves to be up for the challenge. I found myself enjoying the cave scenes as well as the cinema here. Elodie is able to escape the caves about halfway through the movie, making you wonder what could possibly be next. Through different scenarios, her family ends up coming back to save her but she in turn must be the one to save them. While I won’t spoil all the details of the movie, I will say it was enjoyable to watch. Some parts are iffy, but they were easy enough to look past. The CGI on the dragon was amazing and anytime she was on screen I was in awe by the level of detail. Some parts of the plot have holes but nothing that ruins the movie in any way. I think it is a fresh action movie that plays into gender roles nicely. Millie Bobbie Brown did a great job acting, and if you need a movie for a quick watch, I suggest adding Damsel to your queue.
