As the end of the academic journey draws near for many seniors at the University of Illinois Springfield, it’s time to shine a spotlight on one remarkable individual who has left a mark on the campus community: Hunter Kienast.

With his dedication to academic excellence, involvement in research, and commitment to community engagement, Hunter exemplifies the spirit of a UIS graduate ready to take on the world. Hunter started on his UIS journey four years ago as a bright-eyed freshman. Now, on the cusp of graduation in May, he reflects on the transformative experiences that have shaped his collegiate years.

From day one, Hunter pursued a major in Biology with a pre-medical concentration, setting his sights on a career in medicine. Throughout his academic journey, he remained steadfast in his pursuit, augmenting his studies with a minor in Chemistry. His dedication to his chosen path demonstrates both his passion for the sciences and his commitment to personal growth. Yet, Hunter’s time at UIS extends far beyond the confines of the classroom. Engaging deeply with campus life, he found himself enriched by the vibrant tapestry of friendships, mentorships and experiences that define the UIS community. Whether through campus activities, student organizations, or forging connections within the Springfield community, Hunter embraced every opportunity for growth and connection.

Central to Hunter’s academic journey was his collaboration with Dr. Noah Reynolds, a pivotal figure whose mentorship profoundly influenced Hunter’s development. Over three semesters, Hunter worked alongside Dr. Reynolds on a research project, honing his laboratory techniques and cultivating invaluable professional skills. The bond forged between mentor and mentee epitomizes the supportive academic environment fostered at UIS. Looking back on his time at UIS, Hunter offers sage advice to incoming freshmen and new students: “Do not be afraid to try new things! You will learn something from the experience even if it doesn’t go as planned!” His words resonate as a testament to the transformative power of embracing the unknown and seizing every opportunity for growth.
