The Psychology Club introduces movies nights and bake sales to the UIS campus

Looking for an opportunity to watch free Halloween style movies? On Oct. 22, starting at 7 p.m., the UIS Psychology Club is hosting a movie night in Brookens Auditorium. The movie night will be a double feature, including Donnie Darko and Identity. The movies are open to the public.

The first featured movie, Donnie Darko, is a 2001 sci-fi drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jena Malone. In this movie, a problematic teenager is tormented by visions of a large bunny rabbit, manipulating him to commit sequences of unlawful acts. The Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB) gives Donnie Darko an 8.1 rating, on a ten-point scale.

The second movie, Identity, is a 2003 mystery thriller starring John Cusack, Ray Liotta and Amanda Peet. This movie tells the story of ten strangers, who become acquainted with each other at a bleak Nevada motel, during an intense rainstorm. The strangers eventually learn that they are all slowly being murdered, one by one. IMDB gives Identity a 7.3 rating, on a ten-point scale.

The Psychology Club plans to host movie nights every month, most of which will include a psychology theme. Psychology Club President, Trenton Adams, encourages attendees to bring their own snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.

In the past the Psychology Club has done charity work throughout the year, but this year the club plans to become even more involved with the UIS campus, explained Adams.

On Oct. 8-9 the Psychology Club is organizing a fall-themed bake sale that benefits a suicide prevention walk, entitled “Out of the Darkness”. The walk, sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, is three to five miles in length, and is being held on October 18 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Washington Park. Anyone can participate in the walk, you do not have to be a member of the psychology club.

Furthermore, the Psychology Club will be organizing three additional bake sales. One bake sale will benefit the club’s conference they attend at the end of each year. The conference is put on by the Chicago Midwest Psychological Association, and lasts from April 30 until May 2.

Another bake sale benefits research for chiari malformation, which is structural deformation in the cerebellum. This deformation hinders balance and motor skills. Additional information on chiari malformation can be obtained from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

The Psychology Club’s final bake sale will benefit their event entitled “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes”. This function benefits and raises awareness for sexual assaults. Adams will, in fact, be wearing high heels for this event.

Besides Adams, other people who play roles in the psychology club include: Dr. Michele Miller (faculty advisor), Amanda Wanless (Vice President), Megan Stocker (Secretary) and Danielle Benet (Treasurer). The UIS Psychology Club is open to anyone, but participation is especially encouraged for students in the psychology program.
