UIS set to retire eDocs

This summer, Information Technology Services (ITS) will officially retire the eDocs storage option for UIS students, staff and faculty. As of July 1, 2015, all current eDocs files will become unavailable.

According to Kara McElwrath, Assistant Director of Client Services, eDocs is being retired “because [ITS] offers other file storage and sharing solutions (including Box, Google Drive, and OneDrive) that boast more functionality.”

Currently, there are four different options that UIS supports for data storage. They include Box, Google Drive, OneDrive and Kaltura. Each one of these offers better options than eDocs does, including larger storage amounts.

According to the ITS Data Storage Matrix, Box offers users 50GB of storage space, limiting each file to a maximum size of 2GB. It also has a mobile app, software client, and backup/syncing. The benefits include being able to access it anywhere, as well as collaboration.

Google Drive has no limit on the amount of items one uploads, but the maximum file size is 5TB. Similar to Box, it too has a mobile app, software client, and backup/syncing. The listed benefits include the ability to access documents anywhere, a search feature and integration with Google Docs.

OneDrive allows individuals 1TB of storage and a maximum file size of 10GB. There is also a mobile app and backup/syncing available to users. This option can be accessed anywhere and also allows for integration with Microsoft applications.

Kaltura also provides individuals with an unlimited amount of storage space, but files can be no larger than 2GB. This option currently has no mobile app, software client, or backup/syncing option. However, it does allow media storage that can integrate with UIS tools, making it easy to upload and track files.

Each of these options store the uploaded files in a non-UIS data center and can be accessed through your UIS credentials.
