Two-hundred thirty students from 17 Illinois colleges will debate in the Illinois General Assembly in a Model Illinois Government (MIG) simulation session.

MIG Governor, Zachary Sullivan, UIS graduate assistant for political science said, “2014 marks the 36th annual MIG simulation.”

This year, students will debate bills with issues ranging from tuition costs, to concealed carry. Students and MIG delegates will take on roles of legislators, journalists, lobbyists and attorneys.

According to Sullivan, the MIG simulation offers state government education through a  hands-on experience.

“MIG offers as much of an education in state government through hands-on experience in one weekend than many classes can offer in an entire semester.”

Sullivan said, “MIG is a great way to improve public speaking and research skills. MIG also offers delegates the opportunity to network with young professionals from around Illinois. Many friendships made at MIG last a lifetime.”

MIG is among the largest intercollegiate competitive student groups at UIS.

Historically, eight of the last 12 MIG Governors were UIS graduates. UIS yields one of the largest MIG delegations in Illinois.

“Sangamon State University was one of the original delegations to participate in MIG when the organization was formed in 1979,” said Sullivan.

First year MIG senator, Patrick Simon, political science major, says he is looking forward to this year’s MIG simulation.

It will be “a lot of fun to see what it’s like to be a politician for a day,” said Simon.

He explained that he anticipates seeing “how the process works,” and how a bill goes from a committee to voting.

He hopes that students will “appreciate the process” of legislation.

Sullivan said he is “looking forward to this year’s simulation.” He added, “I am grateful for the university’s continued support of this organization. The UIS delegation is ready to rock this year and with any luck UIS can bring home a few awards this year.”

Awards will be presented at the end of the simulation. Students may also campaign for Executive Board positions.

MIG will be held at the Illinois State Capitol Complex Feb. 27 through March 2.
