The University of Illinois Springfield is currently undergoing one of its most anticipated campus developments: the construction of the new Library Commons. The project represents a major step forward for the university, as it aims to modernize student learning spaces and create a more accessible and collaborative academic environment.
“I hope it brings a sense of energy and excitement to campus. I hope, too, that we’ll find the library even busier than it is and that students will be able to find the resources they need with greater ease and confidence than before,” said Erich O’Connor, library administrator and program coordinator for the Learning Center.
Funded by a $42.5 million investment from the state of Illinois, the Library Commons reflects a strong commitment to improving higher education infrastructure and student success. According to statements from UIS, the building is designed as a modern, flexible learning hub that supports both academic and social engagement.
While no exact completion date is set, the university hopes to finish the new addition to campus by 2027. Despite the uncertainties inherent in construction, the Facilities and Services team continues to make steady progress, ensuring the result will meet the needs of both current and future students.
Since the beginning of 2026, the building’s grand staircase and the structural steel frame have risen from the ground, providing an early sense of what the completed building will look like.

One of the biggest motivations behind building the Library Commons is to improve upon the limitations of the current library building. Brookens Library has stood as an enduring symbol on campus since its construction in 1976 as the first permanent building on what was then the campus for Sangamon State University. While Brookens has served students for many years, its outdated facilities and segmented interior layout can make navigation and access to resources inconvenient.
The design of the Library Commons emphasizes collaboration and student comfort. The university hopes the open layouts, modern study areas and improved natural lighting will create an environment that is both functional and inviting.
“I am super excited about the new library, and the design looks very modern,” said Ryan Kaiser, a UIS pre-med biology major.
The Library Commons will feature integrated services, allowing students to find academic support, library resources and administrative offices all in one cohesive space. A number of services in Brookens Library will be relocated to the Library Commons, including the Learning Hub and Information Technology Services (ITS), which is currently in the basement of Brookens.
“I am looking forward to ITS being on the top floor with better Wi-Fi and better visibility,” said ITS worker Christian Edwards.
Location is another major advantage of the Library Commons. Positioned near the Student Union, the building will sit at the heart of campus activity. This central location is expected to attract many students, whether they are heading to the library to study or visiting one of the building’s other amenities. The university hopes its accessibility will make it a natural gathering space, further integrating academic life with daily student routines.
In addition to academic improvements, the timing of the Library Commons aligns with other developments at UIS, such as the introduction of new sports such as Women’s Flag Football and a new engineering technology program. Together, these changes signal a period of growth and transformation for the university.
