Serious Scares: Paranormal Movies to Watch for Halloween

Silent Hill

Based on the video game series of the same name, Silent Hill is the story of a woman who goes on a quest to find her adopted daughter after she disappears from a car accident. On her trip she encounters many strange and seemingly supernatural beings, and uncovers a connection between her daughter and the mysterious town that goes far deeper than she could have imagined. This film stars Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Jodelle Ferland, Alice Krige, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger. Silent Hill is rated R for strong horror violence and gore, disturbing images, and some language.

The Shinning (1980)

Jack Torrance becomes the winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, and takes his family there for the season, despite the history of violence the building has. Meanwhile, Danny, Jack’s son, who has psychic abilities, discovers that the building is indeed haunted, and it slowly wreaks havoc on the family. This film stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd, and is rated R for strong violent content including disturbing images, terror, language and brief graphic nudity.

Exorcist the Beginning

After witnessing terrible things in World War II, Father Lankester Merrin gave up his faith and traveled to Africa to do some archaeology work. He is tasked with finding a relic believed to be in a recently unearthed church that is amazingly intact. Soon after his arrival though, Merrin becomes witness to strange occurrences and tragedies against the local people. He is lead to discover a link between the evil forces and the recently discovered church, but if he wants to help the people, he will have to find his faith again. This film stars Stellan Skarsgard, and Izabella Scorupco. It is rated R strong violence and gore, disturbing images and rituals, and for language including some sexual dialogue.

After the death of his daughter, Mike Enslin becomes obsessed with solving paranormal occurrences. He travels to various haunted locations and evaluates them. Eventually he ends up at the Dolphin Hotel to examine room 1408, which had claimed 56 lives before it’s closing to the public. Soon after he checks in, Enslin comes face to face with previous tenants, terror and his worst fears. This film stars John Cuack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack and Tony Shalhoub. It is rated PG-13 thematic material including disturbing sequences of violence and terror, frightening images and language.

Gothika

Miranda Grey is a criminal psychologist, who experiences a strange meeting with a supernatural entity. Then next day, she wakes up as a patient in the same facility she worked in, having no memories of a murder she was told she committed. When no one believes her, she attempts to regain her memories, eventually escaping and tracking down the truth on her own. She finds out however, that she is in fact, not alone. This film stars Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr., Charles S. Dutton, and John Carroll Lynch. It is rated R for violence, brief language and nudity, it also contains a fair amount of gore.

Thir13en Ghosts

When Arthur Kriticos and his kids Kathy and Bobby inherit an estate from his uncle Cyrus, they decide to move in. Thinking they have inherited something good, they soon discover that Cyrus was a collector of strange things, including violent ghosts. Eventually they find themselves trapped in the house, which is more than it appears, battling for survival. This film stars Tony Shalhoub, Embeth Davidtz, Matthew Lillard, and Shannon Elizabeth. It is rated R for horror violence/gore, nudity and some language.

Wicked Little Things (Horrorfest I, After Dark Films)

When Karen Tunny and her daughters move to a house left to them by her recently deceased husband’s family in small town Pennsylvania, they discover that the property is near an old mine. This place was the site of a tragedy that saw many of the children mine workers buried alive at the start of the 1900s. Shortly after, they find that the children from the mine are not as far in the past as they should be. This film stars Lori Heuring, Scout Taylor-Compton and Chloe Grace Moretz. It is rated R for strong horror violence and gore, language, and some teen drug and alcohol use.

And don’t waste your time checking Netflix instant; none of them are on there, sorry.

Some options that are available for your streaming pleasure are Insidious, Case 39, Children of the Corn and various sequels, Hellraiser and various sequels, Dracula 2000, Seed of Chucky, Session 9, Candyman, 70s version of the Omen and Last House on the Left. There should be plenty of films on this list for you to enjoy should you not own the films above or be able to make it to a video store.
