Women’s golf starting the year right

The UIS women’s golf team has been doing well lately with several top finishes in the last couple of tournaments.  In the Saint Francis invitational the team finished fifth overall, and freshman Becca Ramirez tied for 11th in personal standings. Before that the team finished third at the UIS Prairie Stars Shootout. Even at the Screaming Eagles Invitational, where the final round was canceled due to weather, the team finished eighth overall.

At the Screaming Eagles Invitational senior Abby Vorreyer who tied for 11th after shooting 78 put the team into placing spots. She missed being in the top 10 by one shot and was 13 shots off from taking the lead. Ramirez shot an 84 and tied for 35th in individuals while sophomore Liz Kesinger rang in a 90 and tied for 54th in individual. Junior Brittany Stout tied for 70th and junior Gabby Zeigler shot tied 73rd. UIS as a team shot a 352 and tied for eighth with Quincy.

During the UIS Prairie Stars Shootout the team placed third in their tournament and Ramirez placed second in individual. She finished with a score of 162 (83-79). She was eight shots shy of being the tournament champion instead of Taylor Landers of McKendree who carded a 154 (77-77). Vorreyer finished the tournament in fifth with a 165 (82-83) while Kesinger took 12th place after shooting 176 (90-86). Stout finished the tournament 18th where she carded a 189 (96-93). McKendree won the team title with a combined score of 667, which was 10 shots better than Rockhurst. The UIS Prairie Stars were third at 692.

At the beginning of this month the Stars went to Joliet, Illinois for the St. Francis invitational. Here the women’s golf team finished fifth in the standings. They teams score was 716, whereas Olivet Nazarene won the tournament with a score of 668. On the individual level Ramirez finished 11th overall with a score of 176, one short from being in the top 10 of the tournament. Vorreyer tied for 15th with a score of 176. Kesinger finished with a score of 180 and placed 17th in the tournament. Zeigler finished 27th overall and Stout was right behind her at the 28th place.

The Women’s team played this weekend in the Western Illinois Autumn invitational. Vorreyer finished the tournament tied for a place, putting her in the top 10 of the tournament. She finished the tournament with a score of 169. She was only 14 shots behind the leader of the tournament. Kesinger was the next finisher for the Prairie Stars placing 20th carding in at 183. Close behind her was Stout who finished 25th overall with 207. Ziegler finished the tournament in 26th with a score of 211. The team finished fifth overall with a combined score of 744.

The next tournament for the Prairie Stars is not until next semester where they participate in the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
