Queertober 2021
The most recent weeks have been filled with many events and celebrations in honor of Queertober, a time during October where LGBTQ+ representation is brought forward and the community is recognized. From arts & crafts to karaoke, and even some snacks! The festivities continue, with the full event schedule being listed here.
This most recent Thursday, Oct. 7, the Gender & Sexuality Student Services organization (GSSS) ran an event titled “Paint Your Identity” from 3 to 6 p.m. The hope was to provide UIS students with an opportunity to express themselves through artistic expression, and with the help of the Art Student League, it seemed that we were able to achieve that goal. Prompts were provided to everyone with the hope of providing everyone the chance to have a starting point for their painting or ideas of self-expression.
Earlier this week on Monday, October 11th, GSSS celebrated “Coming Out Day” by hosting Closet on the Quad. This involved allowing students to support each other as some brought forward their stories and experiences with themselves and others in the LGBTQ+ community. The event was considered a success, with many names having been written on the closet door of “coming out”, and ensuring that UIS students are aware of the peer & staff support they have on our campus.
The most exciting part of it all is what is yet to come! There are events planned all throughout October and get better and better as time goes on! Some things to look forward to in particular are: Get Down with Pronouns on Oct. 20 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Union Student Leadership Center, and The Annual Diversity Center, Women’s Center & GSSS Halloween Party is being held in the Student Life Building on Oct. 29 from 12 to 2 p.m., and much more! The mix of events between Queertober and Halloween create an environment that allows the ultimate amount of self-expression.
