Military personnel and veterans make up a portion of the University of Illinois Springfield student life. UIS Office of Veteran’s Affairs provides resources to assist military affiliated students pursuing their undergraduate or graduate degree. The purpose of UIS Office of Veteran’s Affairs is to ease the transition from active military duty to full-time student and to offer information for those interested in joining the military.

In order to provide the best campus experience, UIS has introduced a program called Green Zone. Green Zone is military-friendly campus training for staff and faculty. The program teaches participants how to become an ally for military-connected students. This involves knowing the locations of on-campus resources, understanding the challenges these students face, and being willing to offer advice.

Students can also become an ally for military personnel and veterans by joining the Military and Veteran’s Club (M.V.C.). M.V.C. is a campus chapter of the nationwide organization, Student Veterans of America. Student Veterans of America focuses on providing education benefits to returning veterans so they can pursue their degree. M.V.C. is a support system for students and families. The organization is open to anyone and allows students to voice their opinions on better ways to accommodate veterans at UIS. If you are interested in joining M.V.C. or looking for resources, stop by the UIS Military Informational located in the Student Union on November 11, from 11:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.

In honor of Veteran’s Day, UIS is welcoming J.R. Martinez. J.R. Martinez is a former U.S. Army soldier, actor, author, motivational speaker, and season 13 winner of Dancing with the Stars. Martinez will be speaking at UIS on November 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Come out to see him to learn more about his experiences throughout his life!
