UIS Indian Student Organization Hosts Event Celebrating Hindu Festival ‘Dussehra’

On Wednesday, October 9th, the University of Illinois Springfield’s (UIS) Indian Student Organization (ISO) hosted a table event in the Student Union to share the cultural and religious significance of the Hindu festival Dussehra. The event, which aimed to educate fellow students about the festival, also featured traditional Indian snacks that drew a large crowd.

Dussehra, celebrated over nine days, commemorates the triumph of good over evil. “It has religious and cultural significance,” explained Onam Priya, a member of ISO. “Dussehra symbolizes the removal of obstacles and marks the beginning of good fortune.”

Priya further elaborated on the epic tale that forms the basis of the celebration. The story of Dussehra follows Prince Rama as he embarks on a journey to rescue his wife, Sita, from the clutches of the evil King Ravana. Joined by his loyal brother Lakshmana, Jambavan the bear, and the mighty monkey god Hanuman, Rama engages in a fierce battle with Ravana. With the help of a magical bow and arrow created by the goddess Sage Agastya, Rama ultimately defeats the king. This symbolic victory has long been a source of hope and inspiration, emphasizing the belief that good will always prevail over evil. Following his triumph, Lord Rama’s return to his kingdom is celebrated in the festival of Diwali.

In addition to learning about the significance of Dussehra, students had the opportunity to sample traditional Indian cuisine. Samosas, savory fried pastries, and gulab jamun, small round dessert pastries, were served during the event. The snacks were a hit among attendees, with many students returning for seconds.

Priya also spoke about Diwali, the festival of lights, which follows Dussehra and celebrates Lord Rama’s return to his kingdom. “Diwali involves the lighting of clay lamps called diyas, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness,” she noted.

The ISO will continue its celebration of Indian culture with a Diwali event scheduled for November 7th, and all students are invited to attend.
