Soccer: Scoring more than just goals, but wins

The Stars’ men’s and women’s soccer teams both picked up two wins in three contests to add to their season win total last week.

The ladies began the three game stint on the road versus the Joliet Fighting Saints on Sunday afternoon. Then came home for a Tuesday night game against the Judson Eagles, and finished up with a trip to Kirksville, Missouri to take on the Bulldogs of Truman State. They took the first two games with wins of 2-1, and 1-0, and dropping the final game 0-3.

During their cold and rainy victory at home, facing Judson, the Stars only needed one shot on goal all night to squeeze out the win. After a corner kick from sophomore Nikki Auble, it was senior Kim Tokarski that managed to net the Stars’ lone goal. Guarding the Stars’ net was Paige Polonus, who posted her fifth career shutout and stopped nine shots on goal, a season high.

The UIS men took a long road trip up to Rapid City, South Dakota for two games against the South Dakota School of Mines and the Montana State Billings. After those games, they did have a few days to rest before they headed down to Kirksville to take on Truman State. The Stars were determined not to let the long drive up to Rapid City go to waste, taking a 2-1 overtime victory in both games. This was the first time coach Jesse Miech had won back-to-back overtime games.

For their second game in Rapid City, against the Billings, freshman defender Jack Coombes scored the overtime goal with his one shot attempt of the night, after scoring a goal in the previous game as well. Coombes’ goal came in the 102nd minute of the contest, after a corner kick from fellow freshman Ismael Serratos.

Their win streak was cut short when they fell to Truman State 0-2 in the team’s GLVC opener.
