This semester the Student Union is hosting a sweet display of academic ambition as the University of Illinois Springfield Model United Nations team raises funds for the National Model United Nations conference in New York City in April 2026.

“Model UN is a competitive team that participates in the National Model UN,” said Romina Trujillo, club president and teaching assistant for MUN at UIS. “As an activity, it means representing a country in the United Nations system and working through a specific global problem.”

According to the United Nations, Model UN simulations involve hundreds of thousands of students worldwide and help participants learn how the UN works and what its mission is.

The bake sale helps offset travel and registration costs for a delegation of 13 to 15 UIS students who will collaborate with peers from across the globe at the national conference.
“At NMUN we go to the New York City conference and meet people from all over the world who represent different countries,” Trujillo said. “The purpose is to foster diplomacy, international understanding, debate and research skills, and public speaking.”
