Asian Student Organization revives campus presence with “Mahjong Wednesdays”

After years of inactivity brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Asian Student Organization (ASO) has made a spirited comeback at the University of Illinois Springfield. Once a vibrant cultural group that engaged students through events and celebrations, the ASO went dormant during the pandemic but has now returned this semester with a fresh start, and a new weekly event series called “Mahjong Wednesday.”

Listed on UIS Connections, Mahjong Wednesday invites students of all backgrounds to learn and play the classic game throughout October.

Spearheading the revival is Jerry Wang, a third-year Management Information Systems student from China and the newly elected ASO President.

“I revived this organization because it was frozen for a couple of years,” Wang said.

Wang’s goal is to re-establish a welcoming space for cultural exchange and community building. The Mahjong series marks the first step in his effort to rebuild the club’s presence and foster meaningful connections among students.

But Mahjong, Wang emphasizes, is more than just a pastime. With origins in China, the tile-based game is a cherished tradition across Asia, often played among family and friends during gatherings and festivals.

“In China, friends and family gather to play after meals or during festivals. It’s a way to connect,” Wang explained.

Through Mahjong, the ASO hopes to bring that same sense of connection and togetherness to UIS. The event is open to all, from complete beginners to experienced players, and encourages cultural curiosity and social interaction.

The ASO invites every student to join the revival. Whether you’re interested in the strategy, the culture, or simply a fun midweek activity, Mahjong Wednesday offers a chance to unwind, meet new people, and experience a piece of Asian tradition.

Mahjong Wednesdays continue every Wednesday evening in October.
