The annual Kindle the Bonfire event, hosted by the UIS Greek Affairs Board on Friday, August 26, brought students together for music, games, and fellowship—even though technical difficulties prevented the lighting of the actual bonfire.
Greek Affairs Board President Yasmin Palencia explained that a gas leak in the equipment made the fireplace unusable. “We were not able to use the fireplace to work tonight because of the issue with the gas leak,” she said.
Vice President Melissa Jackson emphasized the importance of the event for both Greek Life and the wider student community. She noted that Kindle the Bonfire serves as a welcome to all students, not just Greek organizations, and highlights unity and inclusivity at the start of the semester.
Palencia echoed that sentiment, stressing that “all are welcome to the event, whether new or returning students.” She encouraged attendees to enjoy the music, beverages, and games in place of a traditional fire.
Students gathered on the North Patio of the Student Union to enjoy activities such as cornhole, giant Connect Four, dancing, and conversation. The event provided an opportunity for students to relax and connect as the semester begins—even without flames.
