Black Student Union: Big plans for Black History Month

On Wednesday, January 29th, the Black Student Union (BSU) hosted a table event in the Student Union. The goal was to raise awareness of the many events and activities the BSU has planned for Black History Month.

February is Black History Month, a time dedicated to celebrating African American history. Ware-Grant spoke on the significance of planning events for Black History Month, “It is important to bring community together on campus through diversity and culture.”

February 17 through February 22 is Black Student Union Week. “During Black History Month, we will have a week full of events and support other events.” BSU President Jazel Ware-Grant stated.

The events the BSU has planned include a service project to benefit hospitalized children on February 17, a “Red Table Talk” where students can share about their hardships on February 18, and a game of Family Feud on February 19, among others.

“Black Student Union Week is ending the week with Ebony Ball on Saturday, February 22nd from 7 pm to 10 pm.” Ware-Grant stated.

Celebrations of Black History Month take on new meaning as the current political climate poses challenges for minorities. Amid the backlash to DEI policies, multiple federal agencies have begun banning “special observances” related to ethnic or racial minorities.

The UIS Black Student Union is an organization that aims to “provide enlightenment of black culture through educational, cultural, and social events and activities.” Black Student Union Week offers an opportunity for the UIS campus community to come together and show support for African American culture and to celebrate, rather than disparage, our differences.
