UIS student government association reaches out to constituents

On Saturday, January 18th, the University of Illinois Springfield’s Student Government Association (SGA) held a meet-and-greet event at the Student Union, offering students an opportunity to connect with their representatives while enjoying free refreshments, including doughnuts and hot chocolate.

The event aimed to raise awareness about SGA’s role on campus and to foster dialogue between students and their elected representatives. Cassie Goudreau, the Undergraduate Student Senator, emphasized the importance of such interactions, saying, “Our primary goal is to be with students, interact with our constituents, and spread awareness of what we are doing here for SGA.”

SGA’s mission, as outlined on their website, includes developing student leadership skills and promoting social, cultural, educational, and recreational activities for the UIS community. Goudreau elaborated on her role within the organization, explaining, “I serve as the undergraduate senator for the student government association, and through my role, I serve on the campus senate undergraduate committee as well as advocate for my constituents.”

SGA President Emmanuelle Yakana highlighted the broader purpose of the organization. “We advocate for student concerns. We are the platform that bridges students and administration,” she explained. Yakana expressed her hope that the event would inspire more students to engage with SGA and take advantage of its services.

Attendees like Jeremie Bokata, a UIS graduate student, found the event both enjoyable and informative. “I’m enjoying eating food, meeting new people, and getting to know the organization a lot better,” Bokata said, adding that he plans to become involved with SGA in the future.

Looking ahead, Yakana encouraged students to participate in SGA elections, which are scheduled for May. “If you want to serve the student body and advocate, you can join SGA,” she said.

The event underscored SGA’s commitment to fostering connections within the UIS community and empowering students to make their voices heard.
