Joe Bonamassa rocks the UIS Performing Arts Center

Joe Bonamassa brought his talents the University of Illinois Springfield Performing Arts Center (UIS PAC) on Tuesday, Nov. 26.  Bonamassa is an American blues rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter.

At 8 p.m. on the dot, the show kicks off with a thrilling guitar riff. The crowd howls. Bonamassa stands front and center, his gold Gibson guitar glittering under the spotlight. He is in a bedazzled suit with décor on the sleeves, pant legs, and chest. The outfit is reminiscent of a mariachi band. His black sunglasses make him look like Agent Smith from the Matrix. His bass player, drummer, and two backup singers stand behind him on a elevated platform.

Every guitar solo from Bonamassa tops off with whistles and shouts from the crowd. The more upbeat songs cause the audience to clap in rhythm to the percussion. At times, Bonamassa removes his glasses and looks at the audience, as if to salute the crowd for their participation.

As is the case in most blues music, his lyrics share themes of love, heartache, and relationship stories. The guitar riffs reach beyond the genre to brush up against rock music. The keyboard and organ sound thrown in gives the audience a thrill when there are lively solos like that of Jerry Lee Lewis in “Great Balls of Fire”. One woman even stood from her seat and started dancing in the auditorium.

Joe wrapped up his 12-song set with an encore of his hit song “Sloe Gin”. The crowd came to their feet in applause for Joe’s guitar-playing skills at the conclusion of the show.

An exceptionally talented musician, even those not inclined to blues or rock music can appreciate Bonamassa’s skill on the guitar. There was a great turnout for a cold Tuesday night show. It is no wonder UIS has brought him back to the Performing Arts Center for multiple performances over the years.

The UIS PAC will next host Mannheim Steamroller Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 21. More details can be found on their website.
