As preparations for Women’s History Month (WHM) 2025 commence, the UIS Women’s Center hosted an engaging planning meeting on November 14, 2024, at the Diversity Center. The session aimed to unite campus organizations and departments in crafting meaningful events that celebrate women’s achievements and address contemporary issues.
The meeting began with a check-in activity where attendees introduced themselves and reflected on influential women in history they believe deserve universal recognition. Responses spanned across historical figures and trailblazers, including Maya Angelou, Nina Simone, Michelle Obama, Sophie Cruz, Aretha Franklin, Delores Huerta, Margaret Hamilton, and Malala Yousafzai. These discussions set the tone for the collaborative and reflective nature of the event planning process.
Reflection on Past Successes
Participants reviewed the successes of WHM 2024, themed “Finding Power in Our Voice.” Highlights included Music Bingo, Voter Registration Education, and the UIS Women’s Leadership Reception. Programs such as “I Love When Women…” and Shades & LGBTea fostered engagement while emphasizing intersectionality and inclusivity.
2025 Theme and Upcoming Events
For WHM 2025, themed “Inspiring & Educating Generations,” several activities are already planned, including:
– Sip N Paint: Monday, March 3rd
– LGBTea: Recurring on March 6th, 20th, and 27th
– Closing Event: Scheduled for Friday, March 28th
Proposed ideas include a trivia night, a documentary screening (Storming Caesars Palace), and innovative Instagram campaigns like “Who Is This Woman?”
Brainstorming and Collaboration
A major portion of the meeting was dedicated to brainstorming in small groups. Participants explored diverse aspects of womanhood, proposed new event ideas, and identified resources needed for success. Suggestions included:
– Social education on issues like the pink tax
– A cramp simulator to foster empathy
– Discussions on Black womanhood and femininity
– Interactive activities like weightlifting workshops and Women’s History Bingo
These ideas aim to provide a multifaceted understanding of womanhood while promoting dialogue on intersectionality.
Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded with unanimous enthusiasm as attendees agreed that participation in the planning process fosters leadership skills. The next session is set for December 5th, where DIY forms for event submissions will be distributed.
Women’s History Month 2025 is shaping up to be an inclusive and dynamic celebration of womanhood, thanks to the collaborative spirit and innovative ideas generated during this initial meeting.
