On October 30th Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. held a table event at the Student Union to promote their clothing drive for Alpha Week.
Alpha Week is a week to “Celebrate the organization and let people know we are here and want to improve the quality of campus,” says Dorian Bogan.
The fraternity set up a table in the Student Union to accept clothing donations throughout the entire week. The group also took down names and phone numbers of people who wanted to donate but could not make the tabling, and members of the fraternity arranged a time to pick up clothes from them.
According to president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Chidi Onyewuchi, the group chose to host a clothing drive “to fulfill our fraternity’s aims which is Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for all Mankind.”
All clothes donated throughout the week will go to Inner City Mission, a homeless shelter and ministry “devoted to understanding the root causes of homelessness.”
“We partnered with Inner City Mission because they are a nonprofit and started up after seeing the alarming rise of homelessness in Springfield, Illinois.” Onyewuchi stated, “Their mission is to help the homeless find their way home by giving what is needed to bring about lasting joy, peace, and stability. This essentially aligned with our aims and led us to choosing to work with them.”
According to Cincinnati Goodwill, there are numerous reasons to donate clothing. In addition to decluttering your home, donating clothes to something like a clothing drive also protects the planet by keeping clothes out of landfills. Even more so, donating clothes can help your local community, as seen with the partnership between Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Inner City Mission.
