Audience Members Debunk Stereotypes at Feminist Friday Event

On Friday, October 11th, the Women’s Center joined forces with the InQUEERy peer educator and scholarship program to host a dynamic event titled “Guess the Straight Person.” Held from 3 PM to 5 PM in SLB 22, this game show-style gathering aimed to challenge stereotypes surrounding sexuality while fostering meaningful dialogue among attendees.

Participants had the opportunity to submit anonymous questions designed to help them uncover which of the InQUEERy peer educators was the straight contestant. Jay Dillard, a student staff member at the Women’s Center, emphasized that the event sought to “spark meaningful dialogue around stereotypes and assumptions related to sexuality.”

As the event progressed, the co-host engaged the audience in a discussion about their detective skills and the questions they chose to ask. This led to a deeper exploration of how stereotypes influenced their final guesses. Audience members were asked to close their eyes and raise their hands if they had ever experienced stereotyping. When they opened their eyes, many were visibly moved, sharing personal experiences of being stereotyped.

“This game not only challenges preconceived notions but also fosters a deeper understanding of identity and diversity,” Dillard noted.

“Guess the Straight Person” was part of a broader initiative known as Feminist Friday, which takes place every other Friday. The next installment is scheduled for October 26th. Each Feminist Friday features different activities, including presentations, guest speakers, and interactive games. The Women’s Center is committed to collaborating with various groups during heritage months, such as Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, Queertober, and Black History Month.

Dillard added, “Feminist Friday encourages open conversation about gender equality and social justice, inviting everyone to engage with important issues. It’s a space where we can share insights, celebrate progress, and continue advocating for change.”

As the series continues, the Women’s Center remains dedicated to promoting inclusivity and understanding within the campus community.
