People of Color Initiative kicks off fall semester with ‘Cards and Conversations’ event

The People of Color Initiative at the University of Illinois Springfield launched its first event of the semester, *Cards and Conversations*, on Friday, September 20, at 3 p.m. Hosted at the Diversity Center, this event is part of a bi-weekly series aimed at creating open dialogue on various social topics. The session drew a lively group of students, eager to participate in meaningful discussions.

According to Travis Gipson, a graduate assistant at the Diversity Center, the concept behind *Cards and Conversations* is deceptively simple yet highly impactful. “It seems simplistic in nature but has a lot of high value,” Gipson explained. The topic for this week was relationship structures, with students exploring various perspectives on how relationships should be organized and maintained.

The event kicked off with a “Would You Rather” activity focused on relationships. The questions ranged from light-hearted topics, such as ideal ways to meet a partner, to deeper discussions about fulfilling physical and emotional needs. Students eagerly engaged in the conversation, sharing their thoughts and perspectives in a setting that mixed humor with sincerity.

After the discussion, students divided into two groups to play classic card games. One group played ‘spades,’ while the other opted for Taboo, a team-based guessing game. Snacks and refreshments were provided, adding to the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

In addition to *Cards and Conversations*, the Men of Color Initiative (MOCI) hosts regular events like “MOCI on the Move,” a quick stop-and-talk series held at the Student Union North Entrance. These informal gatherings provide opportunities for students to engage in brief yet meaningful dialogues on various topics.

The Women of Color Initiative (WOCI) also contributes to the initiative’s efforts with *Women of Color Wednesdays*. These weekly events offer themed discussions, activities, and workshops designed to uplift and provide a supportive environment for women of color on campus. Some events include raffle prizes, adding a fun incentive for participants.

All events hosted by the People of Color Initiative are open to the entire UIS community, providing opportunities for engagement, conversation, and connection. For more information, students can check UIS Connection.
