Coming off a successful 2022 GLVC Season and making it to the 2023 Midwest Regionals, UIS Baseball is undergoing some big changes this year. The coaching staff has shifted significantly compared to last year: the new Head Coach Trevor Forde, along with the new Assistant Coaches Chris Rodriguez and Will Oberg, is leading the team with a new vision for baseball, bringing a different coaching style and approach to the game.
Not only has the coaching staff undergone changes, but also a large group of new players is bringing fresh energy to the team. In fact, “UIS is a perfect opportunity to continue playing baseball for a competitive program and also pursuing a Master’s degree at the same time” states Kyle Huber, a graduate student transferring from Florida State University.
Describing the team atmosphere as familial, Huber notes the collective commitment towards shared goals. From setting up Christmas lights in a local park during the fall to actively supporting other UIS teams, the team’s unity extends beyond the baseball diamond. Post-game hangouts over the weekends not only help newcomers quickly feel part of the team but also contribute to a tight-knit group dynamic that reflects positively on their on-field performance.
The 2024 season kicked off with non-conference games on Friday, Feb. 9, against Tusculum University in Greeneville, TN. The team had a strong start with two wins (8-2, 4-3). Returning home on the weekend of Friday, Feb. 23, to Sunday, Feb. 25, the team played four non-conference games against Davenport University. Despite facing challenges and experiencing two losses (5-9, 8-18) during the series, the team managed to pull off two impressive wins (16-5, 17-7). This first home games weekend not only tested the players but also prepared them for what looks to be an ambitious season, and it saw Brant Vanaman earning the title of GLVC Player of the Week.
Looking ahead to the GLVC season, UIS Baseball is gearing up for some tough games, especially against rivals like Quincy and UIndy (University of Indianapolis). Head Coach Forde, who previously coached at UIndy, managed to beat the Starboys in a regional match last year, adding an extra layer of excitement to these upcoming matchups. Despite these challenges, UIS is keeping their eyes on the prize: making it to the World Series. The team’s commitment to this ultimate goal promises an exciting and determined journey through the challenging battles ahead.
Ultimately, the last non-conference home games, a single game on Friday, Mar. 1 and a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 2, saw UIS winning all the games (9-4, 6-5, 9-6).
The team is now ready for their first conference match against Rockhurst University, scheduled for Friday, Mar. 8 in Kansas City, MO. The anticipation builds as UIS gets ready to host their first GLVC home games against McKendree University on Friday, Mar. 22. This season is set to be an exciting ride for the team and their fans. Join us in cheering on UIS Baseball as they chase their dreams. Let’s show our unwavering support and be the driving force behind their success. Together, let’s make this season one to remember. Go Prairie Stars!
