Press Release: For Immediate Release – What Will Be On Your Thanksgiving Table?
A local group of University students here in Springfield is on a mission. Eight students from the Perspectives on Poverty Class at University of Illinois at Springfield will be holding a fund raiser this November to donate to the St. John’s Breadline.
As the class discusses various aspects of poverty in our nation and city, this group decided to concentrate on hunger. They have learned it takes $2.00 to provide one meal for one person at the Breadline. They are using various venues to raise funds for this effort and are asking people to think of what might be on their Thanksgiving table this season. The Breadline serves 13 meals a week Monday through Sunday all year long. Each meal has 200 to 250 guests present.
Many in our city need the Breadline all the time or just part of the time to assist in making ends meet. Won’t you be part of this much needed aspect of providing for your fellow man? The group’s main venue will be a Bake Sale and Silent Auction held on the UIS campus in the UHB (University Hall Building) first floor on the following dates: November 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, and 15. Their hours of sales will be from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm each of those dates.
Other venues you might encounter are canisters placed at checkouts of local gas stations, of which is the Casey’s and Ayerco in Petersburg, who have agreed to help by collecting monetary donations. Women of Dignity at UIS are working as co-sponsor of this much needed event. Businesses who have donated items for silent auction are: Recycled Records, Dels Popcorn, Cardologist, Studio on 6th, Robbie’s, The Office, Lost World Imports, Imagine That, Photography by Kristi and Café Moxo.
