As we bid farewell to another graduating class, we shine the spotlight on Avery Beausoleil, a resilient presence on the UIS campus since the fall of 2020. Set to graduate this May, Avery’s UIS journey encapsulates growth, academic exploration and a heartfelt connection to the university community.
Initially majoring in Political Science and Secondary Education, Avery made a pivot to History and Middle-Level Education. This shift, fueled by a desire to understand the world comprehensively rather than focus solely on legal systems, showcases Avery’s dedication to personal and academic evolution.
Avery’s UIS journey was influenced by a memorable experience at Springfest last year, where their involvement with the #Gamebois ended in a victory, leaving a cherished highlight in their college memories.
Acknowledging the impact of UIS, Avery extends gratitude to both the Capital Scholars Program and the History Department. Three standout professors – Dr. Elise LoBue, Dr. Peter Shapinsky and Dr. Devin Hunter – left a lasting mark. Dr. LoBue’s guidance in college-level writing, Dr. Shapinsky’s broadening of historical perspectives, and Dr. Hunter’s understanding of the United States has profoundly shaped Avery’s academic journey.
In sharing insights with incoming students, Avery emphasizes the transformative power of campus involvement. With numerous events and student organizations, Avery encourages newcomers to join a student organization or create one, echoing the sentiment that UIS thrives on an engaged student body.
Post-graduation, Avery envisions contributing to education by teaching Social Studies in the Springfield area. As Avery walks the stage in May, their journey at UIS reflects not only personal growth but also the invaluable impact of dedicated professors and a vibrant campus community. Here’s to Avery’s continued success and the countless future students who will undoubtedly benefit from their passion for education.
